Title: 2015 Mazda 3 - Maybe it's time?

Hi everyone, first post here for me and it's nice to be here  :)

I'm eyeing up a 65 plate Mazda 3 2L SE-L Nav hatchback and was hoping to get some insight into what to be looking for etc. It's got about 67k on the clock and has been pretty well looked after. Current/previous owners used it mostly for town driving. Full service history and it's from Mazda dealership so should come with a guarantee of sorts.

I'm coming from a VW diesel which is a nice engine for what I use it for but the it's got to the point where I seem to be finding more issues just as I get the previous issue fixed. I'm a bit done with it. I drive all sorts of roads but commute on a mix of town and motorways but it's not a marathon drive by any means. I've never owner a petrol car as I've only been driving a few years so was looking to get your input on how the 2L drives and whatnot expect from it. YouTube has a lot of content from across the pond on this model but everything I've seen either praises it or contradicts the last review I looked at, so here I am - the real people, the owners!

Any advice you have for me would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

If the car has been serviced regularly then the 2.0 petrol is pretty much bulletproof and very reliable indeed....they can easily do 6 figure mileages. The SE-L Nav has the 120BHP engine which although not lightning quick is certainly not bad at all if you need to get a shift on and i think it also has 16in rims making it a bit more comfortable than the Sport ones shod on 18in. All UK Mazda petrol engines are non-turbo in the Mazda 3 Gen 3 cars which the one you're looking at is and it should return 35/40mpg on the urban run.

  I'd imaging the car will be somewhat different to drive compared to your VW diesel (which will have a turbo most likely) although the handling and gear changes on these cars are top notch. For a car with 67k on it just check how the serviceable items such as tyres, brake discs/pads etc are and whether the Sat-Nav software is up to date. Otherwise there's not much to worry about really, i have a 65 plate Sport Nav and everything works as it should.

Had a 2L 120 64 plate and got 42mpg average over 45000 miles doing a commute of about 10miles each way with about 2 to 3 miles urban and the other Oxford ring road and A34.  On a run to Gatwick or the south coast on motorways or duel carriage way travelling at about 65mph could easily get nearly 55mpg

Had my 65 plate for two years ,i stop rarely works , no big deal, the car i love it, two clear m o ts. It just makes me smile when i see it there waiting for me.

Had mine from new in November 1914 (64 plate)
Took me a while to get used to it, coming from a VolvoXC60.
But love it now.
I like the fact it's a naturally aspirated engine, which has enough torque for me when I need it, you have to shift down for it though.
Yes they are 16" wheels, which are a nice comfy ride ;D
My first Mazda. I believe from reading that the engine is a good one and will last for a good few miles.

Had mot 6 weeks ago said it was fine ,it has worked but very intermittently once for two days , about 6months later went for two weeks without a hitch , then for 3 days , not worked for about 3 months now, i really don't miss it. Will get battery checked , thanks.

There are a whole host of criteria that need to be met by the car before the i -stop will work.

Engine is not at optimum operating temperature.
Vehicle battery is not sufficiently charged. This can be due to frequent short trips only. The battery charge threshold where i-stop is inhibited is typically where the battery has between 75 to 80 percent charge or less.
Battery temperature is too cold (-5°C or below) or too hot (60°C or higher).
The position of the air conditioner mode is set to demist setting: Mazda Air Condition Setting
The air conditioning system is set to maximum heating or maximum cooling (A/C ON) position.
The engine will not stop if there’s a large difference in temperature between the cabin temperature and the set temperature of the air conditioner.
Ambient temperature is extremely high or low.
When driving at higher altitudes, the atmospheric pressure is low.
The vehicle (automatic) has stopped on a steep incline.
The steering wheel is left at an angle and not in the straight-ahead position while the vehicle has stopped.
Engine stop does not take place when Mazda diesel versions are undergoing particulate matter removal from the filter (DPF regeneration).
Brake booster vacuum pressure reserve is too low.
Automatic gearbox oil temperature is too hot (118°C or above) or too cold (0°C or below).
For Mazda diesel versions, fuel injection amount learning is being performed. This process helps to improve many things, including fuel economy.

The main one that catches a lot of people out is the heater fan. Having the blower ( say for de-misting ) working will prevent the i stop from activating.
Followed by the front wheels not facing forward in a straight line.

Try and see if you can eliminate these items and see if your i-stop then works

Yes, my battery is low and the I stop warning light kept flashing, etc, but now it's warmed up it's fine again.
I will have to replace the battery soon. ::)
