Mazda 2 or Zummat Else?
« on: June 23, 2011, 11:54:01 AM »
My and the missus are looking for a 5-door replacement for her 3-door and 8 year old Ford Ka.  The Mazda 2 has come up as one of the options and they're very nice cars, but also quite pricey.   She needs something relatively small, so max size would be the Fiesta/Mazda2...

Does anyone have any advice on what small cars to buy/avoid with 5 doors, max 3 years old and around the £5k mark?

Cheers,
Wurzel

Hi,
You could probably get a toyota yaris for around that money, they'r ok and have good reliability. Have heard the little fiat pandas are quiet good (james may from to gear has one), but avoid the punto they just seem full of problems.
There is one car that gets over looked, and I'm sure there's a few people on here who will agree when I say the skoda fabia is a cracking wee car. They'r reletively cheap, good to drive, reliable, well built and nippy. I'm sure you'd get a good one for that money

Cheers Leigh.  I was thinking along those lines, Puntos are a no-no as between us we've had a fair amount of trouble with Fiat.  The Skoda is an interesting choice - I'll have a look for those.  We were also looking at the Suzuki Swift which seems quite good value?

I had a 1.4 Suzuki Swift as a hire car in Corfu last year. Nippy and fairly economical but suffered badly on hills. A suprising choice for a hire company given the terrain in Corfu. However I would imagine it would cope very well in UK. Comfortable and fairly well appointed, but was a bit plasticky.

Thanks Willpower.  Are you sure it was 1.4 - I thought they only made 1.3 or 1.5?  Even if it was the 1.3, I'm quite surprised about the lack of performance as it's got 90bhp.  Obviously we're not looking for a performance machine, but one of the things that worries me is that the Mazda2 1.3 and Fabia 1.2 have about 70bhp which is the same as the Ka (when new), although they must be a fair bit heavier.

Hi

Take a test drive in a Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo, SEAT Ibiza sport, VW Polo or Audi A1 with the new 1.2 TSi 105bhp engine, cheap to run and tax, very economical and Feels a lot quicker than the published figures.

Renault Twingo 1.2T goes very well and very cheap to buy.

This sort of engine Mazda needs in the 2.

Yep definately. Might be they put different engines in for different markets ( Something like the 2.3ltr Sport in the states)

when 1st passed my test i used to drive my mums old Suzuki swift 1.5 glx, i liked it, it doesn't feel as nippy as a Mazda 2 but it drives just as well as one, i found it to be really juicy though, and after about 10k on the clock the driver seat rattled really bad, and the dash had a really annoying rattle on it too.. however this was the old swift I'm talking about here not the new one.

Thanks all for your suggestions.  Samp, I think the new one is probably better built, but I will check for rattles etc... on the test drive.  AndT, thanks for your suggestions I'm sure the Audi is nice but about £10k over budget!! :o, and the Twingo would be a contender but there's no 5-door version I think.

Honda Jazz 1.4. not sure if it will fit in your budget though! I get to drive one on a regular basis.

+ points
fun handling
MPG town driving gives 40 mpg +
very reliable
great residuals
cinema style seats means its a 'big' small car when it needs to be. Seats down would take almost as much as a Mazda 3 or Golf MK IV

- points
bit slow, but then all cars are with 1.4 or less
Honda servicing is a bit pricey
great residuals not a plus point if your buying.

If they did the 1.5 V-tec from Japan I would certainly get one.

yeah i dare say the new one is better built, Ive looked at a couple of them and to be fair they door look very nice the inside seems very grown up compared to the old swift. as for the twingo your right there is only a 3door available.

My wife used to have a Swift 1.3, cracking car that was really good fun to drive and fairly roomy.  Hers had alloys, fogs, spoiler so it looked better than basic ones.

She drives an Aygo now and she rates it as her favourite car.  I'm quite suprised as she's had some nicer cars imo, but she loves driving the Aygo.

Fiat Panda Sporting looks good I think.  There's something about it, but I'm yet to meet anyone who agrees with me lol.  Standard ones look crap.

Skoda Fabia vRS?  Can be good fun and very economical, but they aren't the cheapest due to holding their value very well.  I love mine.
