Creaky seat
« on: September 09, 2009, 07:36:03 PM »
Hi folks,

Any one with a New 3 got any rattles or squeeks yet? :'(

My 3 Sport has developed a creaking noise on the drivers seat, it seems the seat pad is lifting up when I am sitting on it and rubbing on the plastic subframe underneath. :o :( >:(

I can simulate this by pressing on the seat also, its on the side bolster on right hand side of the seat. :-\

I am also sure there is something loose in the dash near the airvent, does the glove box come apart easily? ???

Any fixes or repairs would be gratefully reiceved by the way. ::)

I could take it back to the dealer but fear they will make it worse!!!

After only a few short weeks on the road and a very limited number of new 3's on the forum, I think it's unlikely that you will get any of our useful replies to this one. Looks like you might be the Guinea Pig to find out how your glove box comes apart.
If you are brave enough to try it please take some pictures and do a walkthrough to help other users on the forum.

Best of luck.

Thanks Willpower for the update, ;D

It was a long shot asking some of the newer owners for any ideas, maybe it's just my car, but I do remember the car I test drove had a similar noise on the seat although not as loud. :-\

As for the DIY repairs, I will have a look into the glovebox rattle, however it is very intermittant and i think it could be the airvent tubing rubbing/creaking in the cold weather so may wait a while longer when the weather changes. :-\

The seat issue, has me at a loss at the moment, I am unsure what to do regarding an attempted repair, lubrication is not the issue so do I try to put some more foam padding in to fill the seat profile. Any suggestions regarding this would be helpful.

With only 4000 miles on the clock, I am to say the least a bit dissapointed with the build quality, however looking at the forum and others seat build quality on Mazdas isn't the best. ??? :'(

Rant over.... ;D

Hello daz31168daz,

Yep got the same problem after 3000 miles on my Sport, went into the dealer last week and they checked the Mazda service site for newsletters and bulletins and a fix has been issued (I think on 9th July 2009) via Mazda and quotes ID numbers of vehicles involved.

Basically all earlier models built I recon and the noise can be identified by pressing the top/front part of the seat up and down.

The noise is coming from the hight adjust lever/ rod area and a lubrication fix has been issued, it involves removing the seat I think to get at the area involved, so your local dealer should be able to get the fix off the Mazda site.

Mine goes in on the Monday 28th Sept, can't get in earlier due to my holidays. hope this post helps.

Regards, Gary

Cheers google09 ;D

Will contact my dealer later on today, i did manage a temp repair by wedging a cloth inbetween the seat and the plastic par of the seat near the height adjuster handle...I know dead technical but the noise was getting intolerable11 >:(
, and it worked.

Quick update from my last post on this subject, after several phone calls this afternoon, 3 to the dealer(Jennings Sunderland), and Mazda UK, I finally got some result on my creaky seat issue. ???

As google09 posted earlier, there is a technical update on earlier new Mazda 3 seats, mine must be in the first batch. However neither Mazda or my dealer could verify this.

The upshot is my dealer claims the technical update regarding this is the seat pad not the height adj mechanism. So I have booked the car in for a repair.  :o

Bad news is I cannot get a courtesy car from Jennings until 2nd Nov!!!!! And I have to pay £15 for the pleasure, or mess on with my own insurance. It is a new Mazda 3 so I will get a chance to try a different model as a comparisson. :'(

In the mean time I have lubed up the height adjust mech myself and all the pivots under the seat and the frame points on the back rest just to see if I can reduce the creak ever so slightly :-\

Hello Again daz31168daz,

Well the creak got so bad it was driving me crazy so had a go at lubing the area that Mazda have identified as being the problem, although the car is due into the garage on the 28th Sept and what do you know, the creak has gone. ;D ;D ;D ;D
Will leave it for a few days before I cancel the dealer visit :-\ as I don't like anyone messing about with my motor at the best of times.

My fix was to spray WD where the seat mounting joins the hight adjusting lever and the creak went immediately, see photos and hope they help ;D

Will let you know if it cures the creak long term.

Hi google09 ;D

Great minds think alike...I did excactly the same thing with my car on Friday after I had given it a wash, same stuff on exactly same seat parts, I also dod the back rest adjuster as well just to be sure. ;D

I just couldn't wait any longer especially until November for the garage to look at it... :-\

Bonus the car smells of a faint whiff of WD40!!! >:(

PM me if the repair lasts and I will do same... ;D

Also took the glovebox out at weekend as I had a slight noise there also, refitted it (properly!!??) thats silent now as well!!! :P

Hello Again daz31168daz,

Sorry for delayed reply, just back off holiday this pm. ;D

Meant to say I had done the rears as well and no creaks returned as yet, so me thinks ..WE.. have  cured the problem. ;D

As a result I have cancelled my visit to the dealer next Monday and won't have to stand around waiting for the car now, however, if it returns I will rearrange the visit though.

Thanks for your help and lets keep each other informed of any change. ;) ;D

I too had this after only 1 week. I applied lithium base grease to the areas mentioned on the base then operated the height adjuster through its range several times. So far had 1000 miles of silence!!
