Why slate the MPS? Because road testers don't live in the real world, and get to drive exotic machinery on a daily basis that neither they nor most of their readership can remotely afford. I suppose that can make you rather dismissive of the average sub-£20k car, unless it has a brand image you can slavishly latch on to (the GTi is the classic example, despite the fact it's been absolute sh1te for two of its three most recent incarnations).

so lets recap... golf gti is a 2.0 turbo and FWD... R32 is a v6 AWD and the S3 with a v6 AWD is more like a 2.0T GTi...I am still confused.

Anyway.. Mazda is related to Ford...and Ford has a bad name in Europe...so they slay the better car in the comparo because of popular views. Same reason why Clarkson always verbally destroys american cars for not being able to turn even though we have the top 2 on the Nurburgring production car times and have 1 car thats got the highest skid pad G recorded from a production car...its all about popularity to pull readers... The M3 will always beat out the IS-F even though the IS-F is a better all around car (asside from it only comes in auto)...its the way of Journalism i am afraid.

Yeah, highest state of tune that VAG (hehe, i'm a child) tune the 2.0 TFSi, at least for now.
Not sure how exact the numbers are but I think its about:
Golf gti = 197bhp
golf gti edition 30 = 227bhp
seat leon FR = 197bhp
seat leon cupra = 240bhp
Audi S3 = 260bhp
all the same basic engine... NB - numbers are from memory, feel free to correct me!!!  ;D

Ah...in the states there isnt an S3...there is an A3 S-line with a V6 so i just assumed the S3 would have a V6...alright i can see where its more like the GTi now then.

I also belive the facelift S3 and the TT-S are now 273bhp due to a new version of the 2.0TSI engine.

Also ive come-up against a S3 and there is very little in it.. mid range the MPS pulled away slightly, but when the mps starts to run out of puff above 5500 the S3 is right with it again.. the 2.0t engine is an absolute cracker.. very very linear and efficent... remap the 240/260 engine yeilds over 300bhp..

Thanks for the update though, I'd forgot about the TTs.

the TT-S weights alot...i havent had a chance to run 1 yet. The uprated S3 stock is a drivers race against an MPS stock.

Depends on which version of the S3 as well - earlier models had the same 225 PS 1.8 turbo lump from the old Audi TT. the 2007 -> model has the 2.0 TFSi lump 262 bhp.

I drove a 225 (TT Roadster) once. I didn't think it was possible for a high output turbocharged petrol engine to be that boring. Linear power delivery is one thing, but I've experienced more exciting food mixers.

I actually think this is quite an interesting comment "over-rated" since every man and their dog in the media under-rate the car and slate it!!

Bit confused as to where this excellent motor has been over-rated!?

Personally I love the car and it is bloomin quick and a lot of fun to drive!! Does that mean I am "over-rating" it!?

 ;)
