Mazda3 2.5T coming soon to North America -we want it!
« on: August 07, 2020, 05:48:14 PM »
By chance, I just came across a video from a US YouTuber about the gen-4 'turbo' (the 2.5 SA-G with a turbo) being introduced into the North American market later this year.  I couldn't believe how cheap it will be (and available in both fastback and hatch), especially as it'll be also 4WD as well and an auto: $29k - that's significantly cheaper than the top-spec UK model, the far less powerful (especially in terms of torque) 2.0 SA-X, which is around the £30k mark for RRP. The exchange rate is currently around the £1 = $1.30 mark, meaning that car 'should' cost £22.3k here.  Fat chance!

I bet we don't see this model, even though we're no longer part of the EU and subject to their 'corporate CO2' rules for car makers.  If that's the case, what a shame.

Here's the link to the report:  https://youtu.be/EcQhAzqU_PA

I wonder if Mazda UK dealerships are seeing anyone express an interest in this? I'd say the chances of it appearing here are less than pretty slim unfortunately.

Oddly enough I'm considering a 2.5 Na...it may be a flat 4 attached to a Subaru Outback, you'd hope the Mazda one manages better than 32mpg.

I would suspect that the 2.5 N/A comes in at around the 37-40mpg mark, given that the 2.0 version comes in around the 42-44mpg mark.  It's a right shame that it isn't available on the 3 in the when it is in North America and Down Under, and seems to be more well-regarded than the 2.0 SA-X because it has a higher torque output and thus doesn't have to be worked as hard to achieve a decent level of performance.

$29k USD isn't considered cheap for us here Stateside. At least not for a 3. I'm not sure I'd want to pay such a high price for it.

Well, we on the other side of The Pond think that's a great price, given that it's the equivalent of what we'd pay (list price) for a near bottom spec car with the standard 2.0 SA-G engine and a manual gearbox!  The £Pound has depreciated quite a bit in the last 10 years, but even that doesn't account for the huge increases in list prices.

My 14yo gen-1 car (1.6L TS2 [mid spec] manual petrol saloon) had a list price around £13.5k or so ($17.5k US) and I amanged to get it (still new) from a 'car supermarket' for just £10.3k ($13.4k) when there was oversupply of cars in the EU.  The closest equivalent now for the gen-4 car, the 2.0 SA-G in SE-L trim has a UK list price of around £20.6k ($26.8k), not far off the top spec turbo's list price in the US.

Our Australian 2.5L N/A Mazda 3 (2017 BN) is stuck in Milton Keynes mid-way through the import process. We waved it goodbye in Sydney last December but Covid has hit the DVSA and DVLA processing and instead of it being returned to us in the UK in March we're still waiting with no firm date. I can confirm it's a better drive than the similar age 2.0L 165 which we also owned from new in the UK. Fuel consumption is I'd guess somewhere in the mid 30s MPG though I didn't ever measure it.
