DPF Flashing - Yup, looks like timing chain issue
« on: March 08, 2020, 07:57:11 PM »
3 months into ownership of a 2009/10 2.2D 185 Mazda 3 Sport that only has 56,000 miles on the clock....

DPF light flashing. DTC Error - P1336 - Crank/Camshaft Sensor Range/Perfromance
Chain stretch is at 10.57 degrees when the engine is warm.

Mazda won't confirm it over the phone, say I need to take it into them and pay a diagnostic fee but I suspect I'll need a new timing chain considering the service departments reaction of "ohh god" when I read out the code to them.

Booked in for Thursday morning.

Wish me luck!

So I was stood there trying to work out why the cricket ball was getting larger and larger...and then it hit me.

Yep, I was right. Timing chain needs replacing.
Car was recalled back in 2012 and had its chain replaced then at 21,000 miles.
£1000 to replace.

Wow that timing chain has stretched quick.

I go the usual "it depends how its been driven and the quality of services it's had" sort of answer.
Got the car back on Monday along with whiny power steering so that's nice... Apparently this new chain won't stretch like the past two did according to the dealer which I don't 100% believe if I'm honest.

Perhaps Chinese timing chains are in short supply now😀 why the new one will last longer.I am not sure why the petrol engined timing chains don’t suffer as much.Perhaps just due to higher torque of the diesels.

The torque of the diesels is delivered in peaks each revolution, hence the need for dual mass flywheels to protect the gearboxes.

A Mechanic friend of mine said that it's partly to do these engines being designed in such a way that Diesel mixes into the oil which causes the oil levels to rise and also thin out
