Glovebox Mod
« on: May 27, 2008, 01:25:43 AM »
hey guys.. have any of you noticed how dark the glovebox can be? The oem light in there is just not enough to help our normal eyes to see anything... well i have the solution to that...

sneek preview  ;):

what is it?

Its an LED strip stuck to the glovebox with double sided tape. it is wired to the same wires that feed power to the glove box light.

I bought this LED strip from www.oznium.com, they are the waterproof LED Ribbon strips which come in 1 feet increments.

I used 2 spade connectors with tap in connectors which i bought from the states. I used the blue for positive and the red for ground.

How to install?

Start off by removing the glovebox out..

Open the glovebox and look under the decoration panel for two grooves which you use to pull out the panel itself.

Once taken out, it will look like this:

the clips of the panel:

Then remove the passenger side scuff plate by gently pulling it upwards from the bottom. Once removed it looks like this:

Then remove the passenger side kick panel by 1stly popping out the fastener then pull out the panel towards the rear of the the car.

Once removed it looks like this:

Pull the weatherstrip outwards so you can remove the glovebox with ease upto midway where the glovebox is:

Then undo the two screws on the top of the glovebox

Then slowly and gently pull the glovebox outwards with your fingers from below the box..Once done.. looks like this:

Glovebox bulb:

Fitting the strip..

there are openings at the back of the glovebox which easily allows the wire to be pulled out for tapping into the power wires

Making sure that the surface is clean, remove the double sided tape of the strip and stick it to the glovebox..

once that is done, using a crimp tool, crimp the spade terminals to the wires accordingly

Power

Using a cutter or scissors, make a cut on the wires small enough to expose a lil bit of the copper wires, then apply the tap in connectors.

Testing

Simply turn on the sidelights to bring all the interior lights on..

To put everything back in place, install the bits and pieces in reverse order as you took them out.

Hope you like :)

Hey Neel, just out of interest when you open your doors and boot at night do your headlights go dim  ;D ;D ;D

Had a friend at college years ago who had an "afterburner" connected to his ham set up every time he transmitted at night his headlights went completely dim.

Serious though; looks excellent I don't have the courage to strip out the car at present.

That is brilliant (in more ways than one  ;D)

How accessible is the glovebox lightbulb? Just wondering if it's worth replacing with an ultra bright LED one...

Need to apply the same mod to the boot as well, the bulb in there is useless.

Good work...

Chris.

neeldub looks like you will have to add a 'how To ' section to the forum O0

I see a how to as different to a mods area.  Mods is how cool things look, where as a How To is well, how to do the mod.

Question neel,

The ashtray light is on all the time when the lights are on, is the glovebox light like this or is it switched like the boot light?

Have you removed the normal bulb? Can't see it on when the LED is lit up. Really need on of these in my boot. Using it so much more now with the baby and can't see a thing in there in the dark. The standard light is about as bright as a birthday cake candle.

i never bothered to replace the bulb of the glovebox as there's no need for it now lool. the glovebox light comes on and stays on when you turn your sidelights on. there is no switch in the glovebox for it. i was going to add a pop up switch which turn the light on as soon as the lid is opened.. but thats more work which i couldnt be asked to do lool. besides the LEDs are very low power consuming so they wont drain ur battery. for the boot, you could somehow tap in to the boot light so they turn on as soon as u open the liftgate..

I was thinking of using a reed switch to operate the boot or glove box light.  about £2 from Maplins + a magnet.  This would allow for a no holes switch.

Cheers for this Neel, your post inspired me to do the same with the boot.

I keep opening it just to admire how well lit it is  ;D

Well hurry and post the boot thread  :P

Considering you like to take you 3 apart and a bit of wiring, there's a DIY mod to make you your intermittent wipers variable speed  ;)
