Just placed an order for a 3 Skyactiv X Sport GT Tech
« on: October 09, 2019, 05:20:34 PM »
With the latest Skyactiv X 2.0 180ps cars hitting the showrooms this week. I took a test drive this morning at my local dealer.
Absolutely thrilled with my 30 mins driving the car!. This engine is totally what it needed after being slightly dissapointed with the "G hybrid" I test drove back in May. The SCCI technology is just basically seamless in operation. You really don't feel anything other than you are driving a normal petrol engine car and the power increase from the G's 122ps to the X's 180ps makes it much more on a par in performance to my current 3rd gen 165ps sport nav.

The engine is quiet with a slight "raspy" noise to it when pushed hard which I guess is the noise coming from the small supercharger?. If you are expecting "push you back in your seat" acceleration then you will be disappointed as pretty much all std Mazda's apart from the old rotary RX7's simply don't give you that. But in terms of a car that has all the modern luxuries, is comfortable to drive and capable of returning good fuel economy this ticks all my boxes. I'd say it has a touch more responsiveness than a Gen 3 but too be honest I think the biggest appeal of the car to me is about how Mazda have stepped up the quality and feel of the interior to the previous generation and how much more has been done to reduce road noise levels which is especially evident with the brief motorway run I took it onto during the test drive.

As a middle aged driver comfort is now much more a higher priority to me than how quick it gets from 0-60. But in saying that you want and need the confidence the torque is there when you pull out to overtake on the open road and I believe the "X" engine is delivering on this more than the "G"

So at the end of the drive and after already doing my research on Carwow I sat down with my local dealer's salesman and got myself what I consider a fair and mutually agreeable deal and so pulled the trigger there and then placing my order for a hatchback 3 Skyctiv X Mhev Sport GT Tech in Soul Red Crystal.  :)

Delivery is expected towards the end of December which is absolutely fine for me and looking forward now to collecting what will be my first ever brand spanking new car. :)

I saw the saloon version in the showroom at Oldham Mazda on Sunday and it looked beautiful despite the £28k screen price. I've already test driven the 122ps version and that was really nice but I've decided that the Skyactiv X engine will be in my next Mazda 3 albeit a couple of years from now. Hope all goes well with yours.

Thank you and yes it would have been out of my reach at that screen price. If you are prepared to negotiate then you can perhaps get a fair deal, for me with the premium paint option of Soul Red its not costing much more than what I had been expecting to pay for the 122ps back in May. OK so its still a lot of money to pay for a car for sure but I have been saving for this moment really for the past four years and this car barring any unforeseen circumstances I would like to hope is going to last me well into the next decade after which I think we will all probably be in something battery powered perhaps  ;D

Good choice of car but did you order(or did you know?) the burgandy seat colour option(£200)which comes with 2 tone dash? looks really good with your soul red paint choice

Well this was a difficult one and a bit of mute point because yes my heart is with the burgundy interior option but without actually seeing this combination against the red exterior in the flesh I've gone for straight std black leather, as both the salesman and my wife pointed out that putting burgundy against the vivid red could very well be a hideous clash and especially obviously so when you opened the doors exposing the two non matching red colours against each other. Had it have been a brighter shade of red on black then it would have likely have worked but apparently not with burgundy.

Any other exterior colour id say works well with the two tone interior but its difficult to form a totally considered opinion on that without seeing the soul red against burgundy combination anywhere in existence? I didn't want to be the experiment in this because if it does look totally out of place then there is nothing you can do about it and you are stuck with it! So the all black interior is the safer way to go.  Unless of course you have seen one in that combination, have photos or know where to view one?

The saloon I saw at Oldham Mazda last Sunday was gunmetal grey with the burgundy interior and that looked a good combination to me. The car I test drove in May had the black leather interior however it did seem a bit dark inside the car. I think this was more to do with the headlining though which was a dark grey colour, not sure why Mazda have gone for that.

You can see the combo on the mazda configurator.
I thought you might say that, but actually if you pay attention to detail with the Mazda site configurator when you select Soul Red and then change the interior to the two tone burgundy/black they actually render this with a white exterior colour as you can see the white door mirrors and bonnet reflection. They have been quite crafty in not actually giving you a proper comparison of contrast between a chosen exterior colour against the interior.

Also the you tube adverts and review clips which have been Mazda edited are often featuring the exterior shots of a  3 Skyactiv X in Soul red where you can quite clearly see the headrests of a black interior but when they switch this to all interior clips with the Burgundy interior you can quite clearly again see from the door mirrors and door shuts they have taken these views from a Grey painted car!. So you are never getting a true picture of what the red against burgundy will look like.

I've tried a few renderings in photoshop myself and to be honest it doesn't look right to the eye in this combo and makes the burgundy look like a horrible clash against any of the red exterior. I think for the red car they should have considered using perhaps a tan or even a sportier matching red dye on the leather?

I'd agree though that in all black the interior does look somewhat gloomy and is accentuated by the dark headlining which is a departure from the earlier generation Mazda 3's. One thing I noticed on the demonstrator Skyactiv X I drove last week is the black seat squabs and seat back are accented with small bright red stitching so it lifts the tone of the seats a little from being just pure black.

The exterior colour of the car especially buying new trumps the interior colour and for me in the current Mazda range Red is the only one I wish to own. ( and I don't get this current fad with batteleship grey painted cars? To me they just look like clearcoated grey primer!)  So while that burgundy interior is indeed gorgeous. I wasn't prepared to compromise going for a different exterior colour and as I alluded to previously without having any real life look at or images to view of the Burgundy against red combo its gambling with a lot of money on the 50/50 chance that it either looks OK or looks hideous. So playing it safe with the black interior.
