Safety features ( software)
« on: May 06, 2018, 06:51:36 AM »
Hi all

Does anyone know if the hardware for safety features which aren't active ( such as warning lane departure, traffic sign recognition, blind spot monitoring and others) on my 2014 Sports Nav are actually already present and available, only requiring to be activated by some sort of software addition/ upgrade by a dealer?

Maybe count the gizmos fitted just in front of the rear view mirror and compare it with the Sports Nav model fitted with the Safety Package. Also the wing mirrors may be different.

I think the clue might be in the manual, where is usually says  IF FITTED.  Whilst it may be true that some items , such as Navigation, will just be a case of new/installing appropriate software, it would not be the case with other functions.

Items such as Smart City Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Proximity Warnings and others are dependant on sensors.  If you do not have the sensors pre-installed then no amount of software will activate them.
Look at life through the windscreen, not the rearview mirror.

As it has Smart City Braking and parking sensors, just wondered if these were also used for any of the other function/safety features and pre installing other sensors at manufacture with just an update at pdi for features bought when ordered at 1st registration?

If you go through the manual, the huge online one, you'll find that some of the hardware is used for more than one application. You'd need to have a look at the car to see what's fitted and what isn't, but I suspect the software needed to run the extras would crash unless it could see all the required hardware.

I'm still struggling to work out what all the forward facing doo dahs in the pod do, as I can't identify what does what. :)

It must be a package as it has other sensors installed (i get lights and warnings when cars are overtaking me at speed), also when reversing out of car park spaces.
So even if all the front (behind rear view mirror) sensors were the same, I doubt they will activate one small part of the safety package.

But when buying it has to be worth it just for the LED headlight matrix...
