Odd knocking noise from front suspension steering
« on: December 05, 2016, 05:19:47 PM »
Driving me car today and now and then I get a clunk noise from the front end like a spring is moving . Sometimes when I start off from a road junction  once I'm on the road straight and going over bumps it's fine. Seems to happen more when I'm going from full steering lock to straight. Any ideas

Possibly get it up and a ramp and check for play in steering and suspension bushes, track rod ends the usual suspects that can start to rattle and click once get past their first flush of youth.

Sounds like a coil spring  took it to my local garage this morning they checked it couldn't find anything wrong with the suspension and steering

Does this happen ALL the time or only after you have just started the engine ?   At what speed does this happen ?

Have you tried doing a search from the home page by putting in .....   Clunk  ......... ?

There are numerous threads devoted to various clunks from the Mazda3. Including the infamous  12mph Clunk.   Perhaps one of the threads might help you in some way.

Quoting myself from 9 years ago :) :)   ( Nine years ! !   :o :-\ )

The 12mph clunk, has been attributed to one of two sources.

Yes it does sound like a metal rod striking a plate. It usually emanates from the passenger side towards the front of the engine. However there is nothing likely to make that noise located in that area so I feel it is just a transmission of noise from another area.

Firstly it was thought to be a function of the Aircon unit, but that was dismissed because although most models experienced the "clunk" not all had Aircon / Climate Control.
The next suggestion has been the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) coming online.  This made more sense as the "clunk" does only appear after some movement at about 12mph.
It has never been accused of being Drive Shaft Click noise.

I have had this clunk from day one, brand new, 4 years ago. I have spoken to my dealership about it on more than one occasion since then, they have even spent time ensuring that there is nothing else making the noise. So I would say that given the number of people who have heard this and further given that nothing unfortunate has happened because of it, then the noise is quite benign and is nothing to stress about.

There are many other postings about this and everyone seems to be in agreeance  that the above is the solution.  My car still does it now @ 13 years old
