The first thing to remember is that the article was produced in the states.

According to one member on our CX-5 site, they contacted Mazda and the reply was that this recall action does NOT apply to vehicles produced for the European market.

However we are all aware that sometimes Mazda are, shall we say, economical with the truth.

So we shall just wait and see.

Sounds like a design concern, not a production issue so being built in Mexico vs Japan wouldn't make any difference - unless it's down to using a thinner/cheaper material in the same shape that's not up to standard. As you say, wait and see (though I have forwarded a copy of the notification to my sister who drives a 2015 UK CX-5...

The CX-5 community on our sister website, have been investigating this recall and we now have 5 independent confirmations from Mazda Europe and Mazda UK that this recall does NOT apply to UK or European cars.

The recall was instituted by Mazda US and only applies to vehicles in the USA.  This is probably due (as Swampy says)  to the fact that US  CX-5's  are  manufactured in Mexico and it is likely that the materials used are not of the same standard as those used in Japan where UK and European CX-5's are made.

This being the case, the article is wrong in stating that it is a "Total Recall " of  ALL Mazda CX-5's.    Just CNET being a bit OTT
