Map Light/Front roof light
« on: October 30, 2013, 01:38:12 PM »
Hello All,

I've recently been round and fitted all my interior lights and some external lights with LED's

I seem to be having problems with the front Map/interior light, which I just want some clarification from.

When the switch is in the place for the light to operate when doors open, do both lights illuminate or only one.

I also seem to have dual brightness, when the door opens there not as bright as actually turning them on by the push switch.

Its a 2012 sport I have, any help is much appreciated, I mainly want to sort out the function of the light to know whether when doors open I should get one or both lighting up.
If I switch the slider to one whether I should have 1 or both lights on.

My 2010 Sport operates both reading lights when the doors open.  Haven't noticed the dual brightness thing though - will check tonight.

What other lights have you converted?  I plan to do the glovebox in the near future, and was going to put a strip of LEDs in the boot, but I haven't found anywhere hidden away that I can put some discreetly.

thanks, Wonder whether my light unit is faulty then as I only get one side lit up when opening the door

I was going to put a strip in the boot should be fairly easy. So far have just done interior bulbs, still need to do glovebox,

and added rear LED number plate lights and front sidelight LEDs along with some better main beam bulbs.

Silly question, but do they both work as individual reading lights?

Yeah both work as individual reading lights using the push switch.

Will have a probe around probably at the weekend now we have the dark nights,

will let you know how I get on about the rear LED conversion for the boot.

Had a look when I got home ref. the dual brightness thing - it seems mine has three settings:  one for when the reading lights are switched on; one which is less bright for when just the doors are open, and a third which is pretty dim for the few seconds after the door is shut before they go out all together.

Think there may be a loose connection inside mine as when I press on the unit the bulbs go on and off and change abit, will open it up over the weekend if I can work out how to get the unit out of the roof lining.

Quick Update:

Managed to fix the problem, I took the interior light unit out to inspect. While working through all the connections it was found that the two diodes (1N4004) on each side were going faulty. Thus only letting small amount through, one side was really dim to off , the other side didn't really work at all.

I have now removed the diodes, soldered in two replacements (1N4007) and the unit is working perfectly.

Hopefully this will help if anyone else has the same problem.

Map Reading Light Problem
« Reply #8 on: September 28, 2014, 08:30:59 PM »
Hi,

Looking for a bit of advice if possible.  I have a 2010 '3' and changed the interior map reading lights to LEDs.  The problem is that when the front map reading lights come on automatically ie when a door opens or ignition is turned off only the drivers side come on fully.  The passenger one is lit but barely.  When you press the passenger side to manually turn it on it comes on fully.  So there is no problem with the bulb, I also swapped the bulbs over to make sure.

I wondered if anyone had encountered a similar problem or could share any information as to the cause?

Thanks

Sorry to restart an old thread but my car has developed the same fault, my interior light is totally standard with standard bulbs.  When I unlock the car and open the drivers door only the passenger side light comes on, when I press the button to turn the drivers side light on the light works, any help would be great.

Also how difficult is it to remove the whole light unit ?

My car is a 2009 Mazda 3 1.6 sport gen 2.

I really could do with some help removing the interior font light/sunglass holder unit to find out what is causing the light not to work.

Hopefully somebody with a Gen 2 will see this and assist. (mine is Gen1) . But I do notice in the Gen 2 handbook page 8-49 it says the following.

  Overhead light/Map lights (Front)
"Due to the complexity and difficulty of the procedure, the bulbs should be replaced by an Authorized Mazda Dealer."

Perhaps it might be better to "bite the bullet"

Good Luck

the whole unit comes out fairly easily, but it does still leave a plastic casing in.

I can try get some photos for you soon, need to do it in daylight. The bulbs are easy to change no need to take it to mazda for that.

Is the problem your having the same as I had mentioned before

Only the passenger side light comes on when unlocking car and opening doors, and if I slide the switch to on only the passenger side comes on, if I press the button to only turn the drivers side light on it comes on............ :-\
