Just had a a quick Google and its quite a popular subject on a a lot of forum's.  The general out come is that you need to be able to turn them off at any point. And if they are blue or green and very noticeable you may get pulled over as they could look like emergency service lighting.  If you look at some newer cars, and  a tread on the forum the is such thing called ambience lighting.
No point in doing half a job, it will only get you half way home.

interior lighting is not really illegal tbh, i ve got 4 led strips in my mazda at the footwells and drove by police with them on and nothin.

heres how i done mine, i connected all four leds to the interior lights ( the big back one not the front two) so whenever i opened the door or unlock the car they come on and if i want them on constantly i just switch the lights on which i also tinted red.

They aren't illegal as such but if they're very visible from the outside then you can be stopped by the police as it could look like you're imitating the police.
