FREE SAT NAV UPDATE
« on: December 29, 2017, 09:13:34 AM »
I have read that  the owner of a new mazda gets two free sat nav updates a year for three years.

Do the first two free updates of six start from the first registration of the new car OR are they based on a calendar year?
i.e. If a car is first registered in say July, are the first 2 of 6 updates free until June the following year OR only until December of that year?

I would not hold your breath on the frequency or quality of the map updates. The free 3 year updates are based on the date of the vehicles registration.

Updated mine the other day for free even though it showed that the updates had expired in September which is 3 years after I bought the car new in September 2014  :)
Made it to retirement  :)

Got It; Free up dates for 3 years from registration :-)

Am I right in thinking that I have two free sat nav updates a year for three years?

I vaguely remember that several months ago I was advised that Mazda do an update in March and another in October each year.

I downloaded/installed my first free update in August 2017 so I assumed that it was Mazda’s March 2017 update.
With the above in mind if I do my second free update say in May 2018 will I be upgrading to Mazda’s March 2018 update or Mazda’s October 2017 update?
ie  When I download/install Sat Nav update do I get Mazda’s latest update or the update immediately after the one being updated?

Free updates are as many as are available up to 3 years from system activation, which, in the case of my car, was a couple of months after registration.

I've no idea of frequency of updates, but I think I've installed three this year, two of which were in the last three months or so. If the March and October scenario came from a salesman, I'd take it with a kilogram or so of salt.
Whether I'd have had more if I'd checked more frequently, I don't know.

The updates come from NAVTEQ.

Do you wait to be informed by email or text of the new updates or do you keep logging onto the update site with Toolbox to see if there are any updates available

You need to log into the Toolbox with your Sat Nav card to check for updates.

Went online to mazda.co.uk and clicking on "buying and owning"  / "owning" tab / "Sat Nav"/ "Mazda 3" /"MZD Connect" / "MZD-Connect-Support / "Manage my Updates" and I finally found this.

"3 year map update subscription:
Get the latest map to update your existing map or extend the coverage of your navigation device.
Visit back regularly to download all the released map updates during the next 36 months (maximum 2 updates per year) for free and install them to the same navigation device."

Rang Mazda customer services and without mentioning my online mazda.co.uk search and they confirmed a maximum 2 free updates per year for 3 years. The customer support advisor also said that in the beginning updates were available around twice a year but lately only to maybe once a year with no fixed frequency. This reinforces "gknight9" comment not to hold your breath on frequency etc..

Interesting and some what bewildered to note that "moozmooz" has managed more than two free map updates in one year!

I always take what "customer support advisors" (or whatever tag they come with) tell me with a huge pinch of salt I've been told some right codswallop over the years by Mazda service managers. They seem to work on the premise that if you're asking a question, you don't know so won't know any difference between fact and fiction.

Next time I have the SD card out, I'll see if I can get any information off it re backups/previous updates.

How do I go about subscribing to Mazda Toolbox newsletters (free), so that I can be e-mailed when updates are available?

My email came from the MZD Connect Team and the updates were supplied by Naviextras.

Go to  mazda.co.uk/mzd-connect/navigation      Register and download the toolbox from there.    Then following the instructions, connect your car's SD card to your computer either directly into an available slot or via a card reader.  It will recognise the car Vin on the card and show you what updates are available.   It also gives you the chance to opt in to further e mails relating to updates.

I updated my maps in September and then later in December, so two updates in about three months. The maps are now provided by HERE not Naviextras, still via the toolbox. I noticed on the first update that some of the speed limit information had disappeared, not in towns but certainly in rural areas. Phone calls and emails with "customer services" produced little and frankly I don't think they knew what I was talking about. The December update made no difference. I persevered and eventually got to Mazda Connect. I don't think they knew what I was talking about either at first but after several emails they said that others had reported this problem and they had handed it over to HERE to resolve - there would be an update they said. Again, following the advice of an earlier poster I won't be holding my breath. The maps now seem to be accurate but the speed limits disappearing is a real bind. Looks like Mazda have gone for the cheapest map provider they can find but heck - I am only a customer who paid for what he isn't getting. When I phoned HERE at the start of my enquiries they said they didn't provide maps for Mazda. Another example of the left hand not knowing what the left hand is doing.
