Haha :D all is now clear. ;) I can say the camera is very small indeed, the size of a small match box.

Just wondering, why did you choose to plug it into that power adapter and not the one in the arm rest / center console?

Hi the USB cable that it is supplied with is 3mtrs long it is hidden behind all the trim and dash, it just wouldn't quiet reach the armrest box no matter how I tried to reroute it, it could have been done but it would have meant the cable being exposed and I didn't want that, however,,,, when I do eventually get a camera for the rear I will order the extra long cable they sell then that will reach the Centre armrest power & be completely hidden.

Sorry, I was a bit unclear there, I meant the models of Mazda 3 with the lane change assist, not models of Mobius camera. I've just been out to look at mine and although it doesn't have lane change assist there are four windows in the black on the windscreen in front of that pod. One is probably to do with rain detection; there's one with two little lenses behind it and I can't work out what the others are for - deciding when to switch on the lights or auto brightness for the HUD?. I wondered whether anyone had had the pod apart to see what space and power there might be, and thought it could be an ideal place to hide a camera.
I think one of them lenses that you are on about is a kind of radar that is to do with that anti crash gizmo we have on our cars, it apllies the brakes if your going to have an acident which is under 20 MPH.
Not sure if its on all models but its certainly on the Sport nav, incidently when I was down Mazda the other week they said it was also beeing added for reverse on the new models

Sorry to resurrect but I've been running one of these cams for a couple of years in my old Civic, and likewise in my Gen3 3 since September but it's a pita hanging a cable from the armrest. I've been looking into a tidier install and have tried the interior light but it's not keyed by the ignition. Researching online it seems like the auto dimming rear-view mirror is keyed off the ignition switched 12v; has anyone here looked into that? I note installs on this thread running a cable through the trim down to the cigarette lighter - wasn't the mirror an option or did you find it didn't work?

Hi I didn't hardwire it as at the time the hardwire kit wasn't in stock & im now happy with how it's fitted with no wire showing other than discreetly where it fits into the power point. My mirror is not powered even tho as a Takuya it was listed with it at the dealership!?!

Can't deny it's a tidy install by the end that you've done  O0, but if I can get away with just opening the wiring cover to the mirror/rain sensor/magic eye instead of dealing with trim to run the cable all the way down... then I'll do it. Otherwise I wouldn't have the nerve to "get around to it"...

The Takuya is lots of bits they had spare before the facelift...so you get lots of sport bits..and also basic TS bits leaving you without a heated front window or dipping mirror. Although not sure what the power the the sunvisor lights would be they'll have a power source up there and less likely to cause issues if you fail.

That's a good idea, I'll see whether they work with the ignition off... Cheers.

Wrong answer :( Don't want the camera to keep working while the engine's off or I'll inevitably forget to switch it off one day and find myself with a flat battery.

Guess it depends on how the GEN3 is wired, may be different although it's unlikely they changed their mind between generations as to the best way to do it.

Just checked my mirror and the green led is on all the time ignition is switched on, Very small plug in connector will see if i can can attach two leads into this for camera. Would be a nice easy tidy way, but p----ing down and cold so later!!

Hi Mogly,
Bit late now I know, since you have wired you dash cam in the way as shown in the pictures with your installation, but for what it's worth I will tell you about my installation in the same car.

Which others may find easier and less complicated than removing all the trim with your setup.

My desk cam also has a 3 mtr lead and like you found it was not quite long enough to reach the power socket in the centre arm rest console, running it via the centre door pillar, but by running the lead down the passengers door front pillar door  seal (one with the door hinges on) then along inside the skirting, then under the passenger seat, with small cable clip under the seat, to keep it clear of the floor, it was then so easy to pop it up and into the centre consolel with plenty of cable to spare to  plug it in and all works fine.

This in my case keeps the front Power socket free for charging mobile phones etc,   avoiding the task of doing it your way.

So should you perhaps some time want to use the front power socket you might like to consider  this solution?.  This only took me 30 minutes to run this lead from the dash cam to the power socket, by simply pushing it in under the seals and trim, like wise it can be pulled back out in 2 minutes.

Pete
