Just Orderd a Mobius Action Camera -Dash Cam Version
« on: March 12, 2015, 10:25:14 PM »
As the title says. I have been considering and looking at these dash cameras for a while especially with the increasing amount of inexperienced, uninsured, reckless drivers on the roads! I drive all day for work at very low speeds in very noticeable vehicles and I'm still amazed at how many near misses and prangs I witness each week all due to careless stupid drivers. So after a minefield of research and looking at my requirements I've gone for the Mobius action cam from the Carcamerashop.co.uk.
Of all the sites/blogs/sales web sites I researched & visited the guys at this online shop were excellent, the site itself is well set out with really good reviews/advice ect on what type of dash cams you can get and how they operate. To add to that I contacted them on more than 3 occasions whilst looking and before I made my final decision and the service and replys I recieved were excellent replied within an hour and that was over the weekend. I'm looking forward to getting the camera, it come already prefigured and just needs installing into the car and away I go. Will let you know how I get on with it when it arrives. Anyone else here use a dash cam?

Hi Mogly
As part of my job I talk to drivers about the "crash/flash for cash" incidents. One day when I was training another guy in his vehicle, I actually witnessed a crash for cash at a mini roundabout straight in front of us. I got my guy to follow the other drivers around the corner where they were going to exchange details. I walked up and gave the innocent driver my phone number as a witness. Afterwards a G4 investigation officer came round my place to get a full statement. All 3 occupants of the guilty car were claiming whiplash injuries for a "10mph" impact. Anyway they must have backed down as I was never called to court as a witness.
That is why I then bought a car cam. The model I bought was from Halfords and it's the NEXTBASE 302G Delux, about £100. I find it very good with a wide angle of view and good clarity when you upload the video to computer. Have had it in the car for about 6 months now.

What is the recording time of these cameras ?   Are they connected into the cars electronics or are they standalone battery powered ?

Morning Roaddetective, that's the sort of thing I hope to avoid with having this dashcam. Only on Wednesday night I was taking my daughter to her friends (8.30pm) and on an approach to a busy roundabout which has 5 entry/exit roads to it and is not run by traffic signals in the town Center the 3 lanes that approach it in the direction I was traveling narrowed into left hand lane only (which I was already in) due to road cones set up for nightime road repairs, just before  the point where the second lane merged in to the left hand lane that was open out of nowhere an idiot travelling at who knows what speed (40 mph zone but it was on the approach to the island) came down the offside of me narrowly missing my o/s front end and the cones, didnt even slow down for the island and ran straight on through the island only just avoiding a car approaching from the right!!! That's the sort of driving that increasingly is taking place, only a few months ago there was a tragic accident nearby involving the deaths & serious injury of up to 7 people speed was a factor among other things. Unfortunately a lot of drivers use the roads and bypasses as race tracks, and then there are those that are just plain crazy! Even pedestrians!! As I said this particular bypas through the town Center on a half mile stretch has 7 sets of traffic lights 6 are pedestrian crossings which cover 6 lanes in total (3 each side) it cuts the town Center in half with a major rail/bus link on oneside along with mostly all parking facilities, large supermarkets, college/Minster quater and a busy town Center shopping area on the other, and the amount of people that just cross without using the actual crossing indicating them to do so is unbelievable!!! Really!! I mean like standing in the middle lane whilsts cars travel at speed either side of them whilst they casually drink from a can of kestrel larger sneering at the motorists as if it's their fault! Inpatient shoppers and school kids playing chicken, because they can't be bothered to wait for the time sequenced lights to allow them to cross! It's madness  :o
Anyway just another reason why I'm getting one.
Back to the camera it cost £69.99, it's not a camera with a monitor it's simply a small action camera about the size of a small match box, which I prefer so I can place it discreetly out of obvious view and so it's not in my way either, I've gone for a wide angled lens, I ordered a 32gb class 6 Samsung  micro sdhc card from Mymemory for £11.99 so I can just leave it in and not have to worry about it. The reviews of the camera are excellent and the footage is really good that I have seen on the site and YouTube to, clear in the day and nightime to. Hopefully it's here today or tomorrow and I can get it up and running.

I've got one myself, there are various versions (and it's not obvious which version each camera is) so you have to be careful downloading the software, some won't be compatible with some software versions.

The recording quality of this camera is very good, the version I have records in either 720p and 30 or 60fps, or 1080p and at 30fps. The recording field-of-vision is larger at 1080p. I haven't yet used the camera on the move (it was purchased as an action-cam for flying and motorcycling, but from the tests I've done at home it seems pretty good!

Although my camera has a good built in monitor, I have positioned the camera behind the mirror on the windscreen, so you can't see the monitor from the drivers seat. By the way Mogly I loved the rant. You sound like me on a bad day, but I put my rants down to old age!!
In answer to Willpower, the length of recording depends on what size SD card you fit. I bought a 32GB card, as it was the biggest it will take.  I think it gives you up to 8hrs recording on a loop. It does automatically save a recording if there is an impact. It plugs into the vehicles socket and I have run the wire behind the interior plastic around the windscreen so that you can't see it. It does have it's own small battery, but that only lasts about 15 minutes. What you really need of course to be fully covered are 3 more cameras, one for each side and one facing the rear.

Evening all  ;)
RD you hit the nail there,,,,,,,, it's my age!!! Kids always say I'm moaning and go off on a rant!! I don't know what they mean???!! ::)
Hi WP the camera I have runs from a USB connector in the aux power outlet (ohhh I sound posh! Fag Lighter point) as Jman said I to have run the 2 1/2 meter cable hidden behind the trim, thru the back of the dashboard and into the Center console I've then feed the cable up thru the gear knob gater and it plugs in to the lighter point (I will provide pictures) it's a really neat lovely job. The Mobius camera I have doesn't have a built in monitor that's one of the reasons I went with this camera as it can be discreetly place. I chose the Wide angled lense option when ordering I think it is a 116 degree view it is full HD 1080p and runs at 30fpm it records in 3 minute segments (I've installed a 32gb micro sdhc card) it continuesly records and overwrites older recordings, in the event of a collision it automatically locks that particular recording forever so it's always available this is done thru Gshock capability and the recording can be used for insurance purposes. I've done a run this afternoon and this evening and the quality of the play back both on our PC and then thru our TV via a USB/micro card reader is Amazing!!! :D
I think the investment of £69.99 is well worth the money. If someone had shown me what I have bought and fitted along with the footage and then asked me what I thought it would cost for such a setup, I would have replied ,, a couple of hundred quid!! Really it's that good watching it on the TV n the living room it's as clear as anything you watch on TV. As for the carcamerashop I can't sing their praises enough I even recieved an email this evening from one f the directors saying if I have anything I'm not sure of whilst using the Mobius or any questions in general now and in the future don't hesitate just get in touch even if it's over the weekend, that's a personal service if you need it and believe me I know because I to work for a service that really does offer a  24/7 365 day a year personal service so I am impressed. I'm going to try and get some pictures on so bear with me.

Hi hope these help, before anyone askes ,,,, No , the gator does not pull on the cable  when you change gear I chose this option so I wouldn't have t drill a hole in any off the trim it makes a much neater finish I think and easy to remove f required with just a stitch to rectify the gear gator. The cable was run behind the roof lining, down the A pillar (window trim) behind the door surround rubber under the dash then behind and thru the Center console to where you see in the pictures.
I'm off know cos the missus is fed up of waiting to watch the film we've picked up!!!
Bye for now

Your welcome Mr Willpower every bit that helps on here goes a long way, it's been a great source of info for me with what others have put on so it makes sense to share experiences and a bit of knowledge even if it is limited (talking about myself guys before you all start scorning me  ;D )

Ps the expected battery life of this camera when not running off the car is approx 2 hours. Also with this configuration I'm sure it also has parking sensor which means if the car is parked in a car park (for example) and is hit, it will start recording. Will have to check on the carcamerashop site but Im sure it does have it installed.

As the top-end models are supposed to have a lane-change/range detecting camera in the pod at the top centre the windscreen, has anyone had it apart to see what space/power might be available in there?

Sorry, I was a bit unclear there, I meant the models of Mazda 3 with the lane change assist, not models of Mobius camera. I've just been out to look at mine and although it doesn't have lane change assist there are four windows in the black on the windscreen in front of that pod. One is probably to do with rain detection; there's one with two little lenses behind it and I can't work out what the others are for - deciding when to switch on the lights or auto brightness for the HUD?. I wondered whether anyone had had the pod apart to see what space and power there might be, and thought it could be an ideal place to hide a camera.
