Light Rubbing'/'Graunching' sound from front.
« on: January 24, 2017, 06:37:39 AM »
Searched for this issue, but nothing recent or similar enough came up . . .

This started a day or two ago.

Best way I can describe it is it's like a Bearing that has a tight spot, it's not a constant sound, but a regular on-off-on-off ~ VRUR-VRUR-VRUR-VRUR sort of sound, low-pitched, with a slight hint of Metal-on-Metal rubbing.

All Pads and both Discs are in good condition.

Sounds like it's coming from the R/H Front Wheel area, or somewhere between there and the Engine.
It's linked to Road Speed, does it when driving or coasting.

Odd thing is, it disappears completely (or possibly just reduces to a level I can't detect) as soon as you turn the Wheel to the left (from dead-centre).
To the right, it increases in volume very slightly on the initial movement, then disappears as above when the Wheel is turned further.

No change in sound level when Braking.

I'll get under and take a look asap, and pull the Wheels for a gander too.

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me :)

My initial thought too, but the mileage (or lack of it at 36,000), and the sound disappearing with steering input is 'throwing' me.

Should be able to feel/hear it by spinning the Wheel, or turning the bare Hub by hand hopefully.

So, didn't even need to spin the Wheel.
As soon as I jacked it and the Tyre left the ground, the way the Wheel flopped told me what was wrong.
Wheel Bearings are f##ked!
Not just a little bit, but totally, absolutely, 300,000 miles sort of knackered!
Wheel moves approx 7-8mm at the Rim . . .

Hard to believe they're so bad after only 36,000 miles.  :o
No sound from it at all during our test-drive (12 Jan), MOT done in Nov, less than 800 miles done since that . . .

Going to do both sides, likely the left is going to need doing as well soon enough, might as well get it done while I'm at it.

Noticed the outer CV Boot is throwing Grease out too, so I'll replace them as well.

Good start to my ownership, not had it a Month yet . . .

Edit just read the new posts (missed the one about 8mm of play some how)...oh dear.

Perhaps it has stood for a long time hence the perished boots and knackered bearings, it's averaged less than 5k a year may have been laid up for some time.

Ah,  but you don't know how it was treated before your  purchase.

True, but it's in really good condition otherwise, inside, out, and underneath.

Seems a 'Full AA Inspection' isn't worth the paper it's printed on . . .

It needs a new CV joint as well, Nut was super-tight coming off, the threads are totally knackered . . .

Not impressed with the price of the Bearing either, £50  :o
Not even a top brand.

I recently bought a pair of brand new Ford rear Hubs, full assemblies (Hubs/Bearings/Carriers/Bolts), for £54.

OK, I give in, how does the CV Joint separate from the Shaft?
Please don't tell me it doesn't . . .  :-[

Seems it doesn't then . . .
What possible benefit could there be in that design, other than making a shed-load more money for the parts suppliers or the manufacturer?
Or am I just being overly cynical?    >:(

Anyhow, I think I've managed to rescue it.
Filed away the damaged Threads, there's enough left to get a decent Torque on the Nut, plus I've Drilled and Tapped the Shaft for a 10mm Bolt, plenty of CV Unit are secured that way anyway.

Will fit it tomorrow.
