What is this plug behind the ashtray?
« on: March 06, 2017, 08:04:14 PM »
I’m busy adding a center console light and footwell LEDs to my 2008 mk1 facelift hatch and when delving behind the ashtray I found this white plug (as in the pic) in a little retainer in the grey plastic bracket with the ashtray light - but with nothing plugged into it. It gives battery voltage with ignition on and alternator voltage (13.4v) with car running. I’m keen to use it for something low powered coz it’s there and doing nothing.

Wire colours look like green/orange and black/red. Any ideas on what it’s for and would it be safe to use?

Cheers
Marc

Not sure if the facelift models had it, but some pre facelift and earlier (as in mine) had a light which emitted from above the ashtray and down in front of the gearstick, see picture below.  It shows up blue slightly above and in front of the gearstick just below the ventilation buttons.
There was a discussion about it some years ago (2007 to be precise, link below) as it appeared to be only on the sports model. Other models had a blanking plate in place instead of the blue transparent plastic lens.   Could possibly be a redundant supply for that.

There are also links within this topic to another, where a member retro fitted a similar light to his car.

Look at life through the windscreen, not the rearview mirror.

Thanks - I got those ones on my lighting plan. :) (Might be a PITA coz I've got the manual A/C controls but I'll give it a bash)

I guess it's probably safe to use that for my console lighting project that is next in the pipeline.  ;D
