L.E.D. side lights
« on: April 30, 2015, 01:15:23 PM »
Thinking about giving my head/tail lamps a spruce up, so silvertec indicators to get rid of the horrid bare orange bulbs and replace with silver. L.E.D. Sides and maybe some blue tinted halogen bulbs. For the side lights I've noticed the canbus bulbs are quite large things due to the resistors whereas normal ones are smaller. Does the 3 actually need canbus l.e.d?  I don't believe it has bulb warnings so shouldn't but just wondering if someone had fitted leds and confirm.

Hi Steven I've just fitted some LED sidelight bulbs canbus free they fitted fine (apart from needing small hands to squeeze in the space to twist and pull them out). Here's some http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/501-W5W-led-extreme-power-1.5w-360-degree-white-blue-red-amber.html?bulb_search=car
There are others to choose from look here;
Go to the autobulb direct home page, enter your reg select model/year and it gives you a list of regular bulbs, upgraded bulbs plus led options for front and rear lights.
I've also just fitted new number plate leds too but I bought those off eBay from redline.  ;)

I'm looking for something that looks more like a regular bulb, with how much everything is on show in the headlamps.

Probably something more like this: http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/OSRAM-501-Cool-White-LED-Bulbs-2850CW-02B1.html

Think it'll look good with these:
http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/581-PY21W-Philips-Silver-Vision-indicator-bulbs.html

Also if it can do without canbus then they'll be much lower power drain, the difference between the two is a resistor to increase the draw from the electrical system from an led bulb to the same as a filament one. Might just pull a bulb and see if I get a warning light.

Also found some 5000k coloured (also known as light blue/white) halogen H11 bulbs...

Edit: Although a pair of actual hids would be cheaper and only slighlty less legal...

So er yeah...73 quid by the time I've fitted number plate bulbs, I'd like to de fried egg the rear lights as well but that'll probably have to wait.

I couldnt give a definite answer as to wether our the Mazda 3's have a error bulb warning, I didn't test it by bulb removal, I just worked on the theory it's a newer car than others I've owned and it was better to err on the side of caution. The type of bulb is your personal choice, but just to show you how much you can see of the bulbs, here are a couple of pictures of my n/s headlight and the LED in place, you have to squat down and get really close to actually see it.

Switched on but take into account it's a phone camera and its still light outside so the colour isn't true as it is to the naked eye.

Thanks for the photos, look better than I thought, hit a snag pulling the bulb..couldn't get my hand in to take it out. Did you disconnect the large grey wiring loom connection inboard of the lamp units?

Found this online, the left headlamp is the exact combo I'd like Phillips diamond vision 5k and led side.

Yes, just press the clip in on the harness hold it in and pull it apart, one side of the harness is fixed on to a little plastic arm (underside) it's only slotted on and isn't fixed by anything just wiggle it loose by pulling it and it gives you a little more room to work with as you will have both side of the wiring loom out of the way, then either 3 fingers or thumb and 2 fingers can get in to turn the bulb holder quarter of a turn to loosen it off and pull it out, in reverse do the same but,,, I found it easier to kneel down and look at the bulb through the headlamp/sidelight as I put it in position located the slots then twisted it to the lock position. Alternatively borrow someone with small hands to do the job while you instruct from the side lines with a cold one in your stubby holder  O0 .

Was up early this morning so decided to stop procrastinating and do it. First pulled a bulb and confirmed no warnings, second read the manual as to how to remove bulbs...I did this the wrong way I'll admit. Probably just as well as the manual specifies removing the arch liners for all but headlamp bulb changes, when all that is required is the unclipping of the headlamp loom to allow access. I can confirm canbus compatible bulbs are not required, also if you do decide to fit LEDs try the light before refitting the holder. LEDs work one way only and I have a 100% track record for fitting them backwards and having to start again...

Neway pictures, Standard in daylight, new in daylight, new bulb off and final newbulbs at night...although they make the headlamps look hilariously yellow so that is my next job.

Hi StevenRB45
I've just ordered these silver indicator bulbs from eBay
http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=360468255567
The ones you pointed out further up this post don't fit our model as they are a bayonet fitting and ours are capless, once received and fitted I will let you know if they are ok.

Good job I haven't ordered any yet then! Strangely I was looking at the clusters today thinking about getting some silverbulbs. I await photos of the front with interest want to see how it looks, although you will always have the red edges at the rear and the orange at the front. The rear looks cleaner, think the front should look a lot better given how obvious the bulbs are.

Edit: spotted your post in the Takuya thread, rather than cluttering it up with bulb talk I'll post here. I went for Phillips Diamond Vision H11

I had a look a while ago you can reach the back of the indicators from above but it will probably be a lot easier with the arch liners peeled back. If I'm going to the trouble i'd also change the fog bulbs while I'm there, to sort this out.

Looks like I've specifically fitted yellow bulbs to the fogs! Also I think I will do the side repeaters as well as the fried egg is very strong in clear lens in the middle of a white wing!
