You'll be fine until the named driver needs to claim...

The driver named as a second driver, they are still permitted to drive the car and thus validly claim on insurance surely?

Of course.

However if that named driver is someone who would otherwise be a very different insurance risk, your insurance company is not going to take a claim, for example in rush hour traffic without diligence on their part to find out or claim who is the real main driver.

Insurance databases are shared and if the insurance company has it suspicions that the insurance policy may be 'fronted' by parents or a relative they will investigate it, to which they could then refuse to pay out which you can do pretty much nothing about.

For example if the father of a the family is insured on two cars as the main driver both registered at his address where as he lives with his wife and daughter. The first car being an 11 plate 2.0 Insignia, and the second a 04 plate 1.2 Clio. His daughter then crashes on the way to work. Is anyone with half a brain assessing the claim really not going to instantly think somethings up ?

Fronting on Insurance is all well a good to keep the price down, until the actual main driver of the car crashes...
