Gearknob Refurb
« on: October 07, 2013, 07:49:08 PM »
Hi all,

I've been trawling the forum and other forums for a guide on how to refurb a Mazda gear knob. Im a tight bugger, and cannot justify almost £50 on a new one.

First of all you need to unscrew the gear knob. It'll probs be rather tight. but it will come off the usual way.... righty tight, lefty loosey and all that.

You are left with this

Then you need to pry off the chrome insert. I used a small nail file. There is a clip at the top and bottom and it is also glued. Mine popped of nice and easily as it seems the glue had perished.

This is it all apart. Pretty grimey with all that hand muck! Ew!

So i gave the actual knob a good scrub with a bit of fairy and hot water.

The chrome is now in bleach doing its thing.

Ill be posting further steps as i do them.

Apoligies for the constant referencing to 'knobs'..... no other way to put it really!! haha!

I'm wondering if someone wore a ring constantly and kept nicking it.

Highly likely... Remember in UK we use the left hand to change gear. Wedding / Engagement ring is on the same side.    They could at least have kept it clean though. Yuck ! !

Try with vinegar instead of bleach, leave it overnight.
