HOW TO GET CHEAP CAR INSURANCE ?
« on: June 04, 2010, 09:04:41 PM »
Three people drive in our house, me for 10 years plus, no accidents or claims, my wife for 1 year, no accidents or claims, and my twenty year old son for 9 months, no accidents or claims, i am the main driver on my car a Mazda 3 and my wife is a named driver, can i be the named driver on my sons car and put him on the policy as a named driver to keep the costs down, or any other suggestions for him to get a affordable policy?
Also anyone know what is the cheapest diesel for a young driver to get insured on?

My mum has been a named driver on my policy ever since i started driving and it reduces the policy a fair but. She is still a named driver. It is not shady at all.

It is only illegal if you are the named driver and your son is named driver and your son is actually the main driver.

To reduce premiums i play around with occupation (making sure it is still accurate), Where the car is parked i.e. roadside etc (My insurance is cheaper if the car is on the roadside than in a garage! These are the main 2.

Having the most appropriate accurate occupation, on the roadside and mum on my polisy as a named driver saves me 300 ish per year.

yeh insurance is a crazy thing i use 2 have my dad and mum on my insurance as i am only 19 but i bought a 1.6 ts and thought that the insurance wouldnt be 2 much......... this was almost a massive mistake when the cheepest quote i could get any where was 5 grand :o  the way i got around it was 2 put my self as a named driver on my partners insurance which made it 2 grand
so being a woman pays off
still a crazy amount but worth it :)

If you insure it as the main driver and your son as the named (second) driver, its called 'Fronting' and technically illegal in the eyes of the insurance company.

You could stand to have the insurance withdrawn or not pay out if they can prove that its his main car and not yours.

Saying that we did it when oour lad got his first car until he started earning to pay for his own.

the problem for your son is that aviva add a under 21 eccess of 150 pound on top of your choice so if you pick 300 pound you would pay 450 if you are over 21. so in some cases it could be worth just paying the differace any way

Cheap(er) can end up very expensive. For "fronting" read FRAUD. In the event of an accident and the insurer finding that the named driver is actually the main driver, they can and will cancel the insurance. Third parties will be covered - the driver and his car won't be. The insurer can also pursue the "insured" for costs, which could include payouts to third parties.
The "insured" could also be charged with driving without insurance.
And the next time you try to get insurance and you're asked the question " Have you ever been refused cover or had insurance cancelled?", you start paying again.
All worst case scenarios, but worth bearing in mind.

And, of course, the same applies to undeclared modifications.

The underlying cause is young drivers trying to get insurance for cars beyond their reach. Why are they beyond their reach? Because their peers, many of whom appear to have "learnt" to drive using their thumbs, have a bloody awful accident record. Bit of a Catch 22 if you're a responsible young driver. Solution - be patient and start with something small and "safe" for the first year or two. You've got plenty life left (hopefully) to enjoy more desirable cars when you can afford them, without having to take out a mortgage to pay for insurance.

As mentioned before putting your son as an additional driver when infact it is his car and 99% of the time it will be him driving it is called fronting and insurance companies have became pretty savy about it in recent years. Not worth the risk imo.

Putting him on his own insurance policy, with you and your wife as additional parties would bring the price down. Plus as Stuno1 says playing about with different aspects of the quote such as where the car is parked at night etc can all save on the ££.

But whatever you do, in order to do it properly it isn't gonna be cheap. Insurance below 21 is a joke. My first car was a 1.4 8v Punto cost me just over £1200 for the year! Couple of years no claims and now onto my Takara and its about £650. Still more than I want to pay though!

Re: the comment about being a woman pays off

Not I my case.  Mine has never been "cheap" and in the past these car insurance companies that specialise in insurance for women drivers were always more expensive than other insurers.  When I asked them what it was that made my insurance expensive, it was the engine ( 2 litres at the time).

Also they are not supposed to be giving women cheaper insurance remember??

Not that I endorse fronting but, how would an insurance company ever be able to determine who the main driver is or not?

You'll be fine until the named driver needs to claim...

The driver named as a second driver, they are still permitted to drive the car and thus validly claim on insurance surely?
