why are heated screens not available anymore????
« on: April 19, 2017, 03:46:22 PM »
Hi.

We've had a 2009 sport for 6 years now and love it.   Thinking of changing to the current version but see it's not possible to get a heated front windscreen on any version.   Does anyone know why as we think this feature is a god send on cold days and really want our next car to have it.

Thanks

Ford hold the patent for quickclear, Ford's partnership with Mazda ended in 2015, so no more quickclear :(

Quite a few other heated windscreens apart from Ford version. Discussion at http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/ford-quickclear-windscreen-what-do-other-makes-offer is one of many search hits.

I assume Mazda have other reasons for not having heated windscreens.

This is pure conjecture but it is plausible that when Mazda bought out Ford's options in the company, that Ford laid down certain restrictions.

It could well be that as Ford had the copyright/patent on heated screens, that part of the agreement was that Mazda were prevented from pursuing similar tech.
Look at life through the windscreen, not the rearview mirror.

Possible, but unlikely as there appear to be many options other than the system used by Ford. These screens aren't without problems. Maybe Mazda just didn't think they were worth having.

Maybe both are - its been noticeable to me that Mazda have slimmed down their options range when the mk3 Mazda3 and other models arrived, probably to save money on development costs, given they are a far smaller company than Ford, or most other Japanese/Far Eastern car manufacturers.  Sensible in a way (I think they may have gone a bit too far, e.g. the reduction in interior trim in non-Sport models to one only, dropping auto models from the 3 fastback range for 2017 [at least in the UK]) - focussing (pardon the pun) on their core markets until they can gradually expand over a reasonable amount of time without taking on too much debt to finance it.  I suspect this conservative approach means that they won't be looking to either use any third party 'quickclear windscreen' replacement (especially follwoing the well-documented problems with the bought-in diesels) or spending money on developing a system themselves, at least for the time being.

They still, I think, share the diesel engine technology with Ford & PSA, although I'm not really sure - they may be developing them on their own with the previous generation engines as a basis, agreed with Ford and PSA.  Obviously they still have yet to overcome quite a few of the legacy problems associated with those engines, even taking into account some are exacerbated by inappropriate usage, such as regular short trips and low annual mileages of car owners.  Hopefully they will be able (apparently coming soon-ish) to develop a decdent (presumably) petrol-hybrid engine that can be marketed to fill the (small) gap between the petrol and diesel models.
