Paint Warranty??
« on: April 09, 2015, 07:03:23 PM »
Hello All.

I have been hearing a "creaking" noise coming from the boot of my car since I got it.  I have tried softening the edges of the parcel shelf and everything to try to make it stop.  Today while washing the car I noticed that the spoiler is quote loose and on the edge near the window it is rubbing the paint away and is starting to rust.  Does anyone know if this might be covered under warranty?  The car is a September 2009 59 reg.  I looked in the handbook and it says there is a corrosion warranty for 12 years as long as the car has had a full inspection with each service.  I only got the car last year and it has full Mazda service history??

And since I said all clean, here you go!  Drool!

You are not going to like my answer, but you need to know this.

The Mazda 12 year paintwork warranty only applies if the corrosion that might be caused by a paintwork defect, perforates right through the metal.  Effectively this means that unless there is a hole right through the metal they will not cover any rust caused by "faulty" paint or items such as your problem.  Very crafty wording.

I went through a similar exercise only last year (my car being 10 years old at the time). I had some rust spots on the roof.
Whilst the dealer was sympathetic, he told me the above and said that due to the inherent thickness of the metal, it was very rare for any perforations to occur before the 12 years were up.
That being so, Mazda were in the clear and were not liable for "blemishes".

Sorry to be the bearer of sad news.  If I were you, I would remove the spoiler and deal with the rust yourself, or if you don't feel up to it then any bodyshop would do it for you.

Thanks for your response, sort of what I was expecting  :(

I know Mazda will try to weasel their way out of paying for any types of repairs, however the problem is the spoiler is loose and rubbing the paint off which is why its rusting.

I know someone who had a Focus RS which was 4 years old at the time and the rear bumper was bolted on too tight and rubbed the paint off and Ford paid for the repair.

I know a body shop could sort it out but its the ££££ part of it.  Anything can be done for the right amount of money.

Does anyone know if there is a way to fix the loose spoiler??

Interesting I've had a similar creaking since day one of owning mine to !? Ive padded the obvious in the boot area/spare wheel well etc in the past but still it creaks! I will investigate the spoiler tomorrow but to be honest I clean my car weekly and haven't noticed any rubbing but will double check and let you know.
As for tightening it up it looks simple to do, the fixings are easily visible/accessible, I looked at the fixings as I was considering upgrading to the mps spoiler.
And I agree about car warranties full of loop holes for manufactures to avoid responsibility!!!!

I've heard the creaking noise since pretty much getting the car, and the paint rubbing off and rusting and loose spoiler has confirmed to me thats what is making the noise!

I will be interested to see if yours is doing the same!

Hi took a look round the spoiler and no sign of rubbing.
But on another really bum note ,,,,,, I've curbed my near side alloy today!!!!!!  :'( :'(
I've never curbed a wheel before not even the cars I drive at work and they are all stretched! My beautiful gunmetal rx8 alloy looks like a 50 pence piece !!
I've birched my self all day with a piece of barbed wire then poured vinegar on myself to remind myself never to do it again!
Off to the powder coaters next week  :(

Ouch!!!

On a different note I have decided it is the parcel shelf after all.  I had it out yesterday and didn't hear the noise once!!!

Rear spoiler is a piece of piddle to remove. I have pictures of how to do it somewhere, not sure if I completed a walk through on the forum or not.
I will take a look and post the link if I find it.  If not I have the pics and will post them for you
